Afghanistan: Detention and abuse of children

Last night, November 28, 2010 there was a very disturbing story on CBC National News about the detention of Afghan children by the Canadian army. According to this story such children are kept in Canadian custody indefinitely and then are often handed over to Afghans who regularly abuse such children. Is that what is called democracy? Is that the democracy we are spreading in Afghanistan?
Now Harper wants to train Afghan military. Since we are such ‘great experts’ why not? I don’t feel good to be Canadian. It would look more harm is being done than social justice in Afghanistan. Another good example of such harm is propping up one of the most corrupt governments, that of Karzai.

Afghanistan: Training of Afghan Police

It is a disastrous situation. Desertion aplenty. 7+ Billion U.S dollars later and no reliable police force exists in Afghanistan. Then the corruption is rampant. Former U.S ambassador to Afghanistan Peter W. Galbraith makes some interesting comments. As he was driven out of the U.S embassy his driver had to pay bribe to a policeman short distance from the embassy in order to avoid being held-up. Peter Galbraith says it is simply not possible to train police properly in Afghanistan when majority cannot read and write. He says you need 100 years to do a decent job.

Now Harper wants to train the Afghan military. Really! Keep on fooling the Canadian public Mr. Harper.

U.S negotiating with Taliban?

U.S negotiators were supposed to be negotiating with a Taliban named Mullah Akhtar Mansour. This Taliban negotiator was recommended by General Stanley McChrystal and met Karzai many times and he also met General David Petraeus. Now it turns out that this guy was no Mullah Akhtar Mansour and was a fake. U.S negotiators found out about this fake guy when he had already gotten hundreds of thousands of U.S dollars for being a good Taliban and willing to negotiate. Now he has completely disappeared. In other words, U.S and NATO maybe were financing Taliban. Good one, eh! We are making such a big fool of ourselves. So sad.

This is indeed very scary. Now there is talk of training the Afghan army. Are we sure? Maybe we are training Taliban who then will be better equipped to fight U.S and other NATO forces. This is a big time fiasco.

It makes sense that if Afghans can defeat former Soviet Union and so far U.S, Canada and other NATO forces have made not much of headway then who is the better trained to fight in Afghanistan? Who is in need of training?

Child Labour in the Western World

We claim to be progressive and democratic societies in the west. We are officially against child labour. Now what about T.V commercials after commercials by children? Is that not labour? Here are some examples and you can see a lot more videos here.

Then there is child pornography and child prostitution and in that respect we are with rest of the world or the incidences of such crimes are higher than some Asian countries.

The incidences of child pornography and prostitution is lower in some Asian countries because of close-knit families and what is called informal social control. Many sociological studies have revealed such a trend in certain Asian countries vs. the west.

Then Obama and Harper are tripping over each other to do business with India, notorious for child labour. Is Obama or Harper going to raise questions about that? I doubt it.

However, CNN going to the length of firing Sanchez was absolutely ridiculous. Sanchez said that CNN and other media are controlled by Jews. By firing him, they did little to disprove this assertion. Jon Stewart himself said that the firing was wrong.

It is no wonder that CNN - once a powerful and respected news network - is now lagging behind FOX and MSNBC. There is a serious problem with CNN's management and the handling of Sanchez is proof of that.
