Racism: Washington Redskins Football Team

Natives find the term Redskins highly offense. It has the historic background as follows:

"Back not so long ago, when there was a bounty on the heads of the Indian people...the trappers would bring in Indian scalps along with the other skins that they had managed to trap or shoot. These scalps brought varying prices as did the skins of the animals....

The trappers would tell the trading post owner or whoever it was that he was dealing with, that he had 2 bearskins, a couple of beaver skins...and a few scalps. Well, the term "scalp" offended the good Christian women of the community and they asked that another term be found to describe these things. So, the trappers and hunters began using the term "redskin"...they would tell the owner that they had bearskin, deer skins....and "redskins." Tina Holder,  Mesa, Az.



Would it get any more offensive? Those trappers were the real barbarians.

Call it Washington Jackasses Football Team as Washington D.C. is full of jackasses(Loonies or Washington Balls Team) but don't call it Redskins. Is it that hard to understand? Bigots have come out of woodworks to defend their bigotry and racism.

Quebec's Charter of 'Values': 5 things it would do and 5 things it wouldn't

From reading these 5 things (would & wouldn't) it is obvious who is targeted.

Would

• 1. Bar public sector employees — including everyone from civil servants to teachers, provincial court judges, daycare workers, police, health-care personnel, municipal employees and university staff — from wearing a hijab, turban, kippa, large visible crucifix or other "ostentatious" religious symbols while on the job.
• 2. Allow five-year opt-outs from the ban for certain organizations, but not daycare workers or elementary school teachers.
• 3.Require that those receiving or providing government services uncover their faces.
• 4.Exempt elected members of the Quebec legislature from the regulations.
• 5.Amend Quebec's human rights legislation, the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, to specify limits on when someone can stake a claim for religious accommodation.

Wouldn't

• 1.Remove religious symbols and elements considered "emblematic of Quebec's cultural heritage." That includes: the crucifixes in the Quebec legislature and atop Mount Royal in Montreal, the thousands of religiously based geographic names (e.g. Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!) and the names of schools and hospitals.
• 2.Ban public sector employees from wearing small religious symbols like a ring with a Star of David, earrings with the Muslim crescent or a necklace with a small crucifix.
• 3.Eliminate subsidies to religious private schools. The Quebec government currently funds about 60 per cent of the budgets of most of the province's private schools, including parochial ones.
• 4.Ban opening prayers at municipal council meetings, which was recommended by the 2008 Bouchard-Taylor Commission report into cultural accommodation. The Quebec Court of Appeal ruled in May that such prayers do not necessarily violate Quebec's current human rights legislation.
• 5.Eliminate property tax exemptions for churches, mosques, synagogues and other religious buildings.

Oprah Winfrey faces racism in Switzerland

Racism is well and alive in Europe and North America. Oprah Winfrey was denied service at a store in Zurich, Switzerland. She said she had similar experiences in America. Earlier Barack Obama commenting on Trayon Martin case stated that he faced similar treatment as he was growing up. It is a very sad state of affairs right into the 21st century.

Barack Obama on Trayvon Martin's case

I am very impressed by the stand Barack Obama took on the case of Trayvon Martin who was murdered by George Zimmerman.


"You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago. And when you think about why, in the African- American community at least, there's a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it's important to recognize that the African- American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that -- that doesn't go away," he said.

 “There are very few African-American men in this country who haven’t had the experience of being followed when they are shopping at a department store. And that includes me.” 

 He also called for a review of so-called "Stand Your Ground" laws, a central issue in the case.

Rev. Al Sharpton speaks out on Trayvon Martin case

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton has announced a national movement - to protest in front of courts over the course of a year - in reaction to the verdict where George Zimmerman was acquitted for the murder of Trayvon Martin. The verdict in this case is an affront to civil rights, a black teenager, unarmed, minding his own business, was pursued and murdered.

The verdict highlights that there is still a long way to go for true civil and human rights in America, that while much progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. We are a long way from a post-racial society.

This verdict is a huge step backwards, validating racial profiling. Also, for African-Americans in Florida - or in any state with "stand your ground" laws - they have very good reason to be worried about their safety and security. After all, George Zimmerman was let off for killing an African-American teenager who was unarmed.

In the United States, there is a very strong racial bias to stand your ground laws - which Zimmerman used to get let off - against African-Americans. This chart is very telling.

 Zimmerman was taken to the police station and let go, and Trayvon's parents were not notified for 24 hours, by which time their son lay dead in the hospital.

This is pure injustice.

New York Subway Murder: What is this world coming to?

It is staggering that there are such people out there, people capable of such hatred and cruelty. A woman shoved a man onto a subway track in New York City because, as she stated, she hates Muslims and Hindus because of 9/11 (of course no Hindus were involved in 9/11 and Al Qaeda represents a tiny tiny fraction of Muslims).

This woman's ignorance and hatred is unbelievable.

It is actually unclear if the man killed was Muslim - he was from India - so may have been Hindu or Christian.

Racism in America is well, alive and thriving

Peter Morrison, treasurer of the Hardin County Republican Party, wrote a column in the post-election edition of his Tea Party newsletter this week calling for an "amicable divorce" from the U.S., the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Morrison went on to express anger at the "maggots" who backed Obama, specifically calling out non-white voters, whom he accused of voting for the president on an "ethnic basis."


A woman Denise Helms, a 22-year-old California woman made racist and threatening comments on her Facebook.




“Another 4 years of this (N-word),” Helms wrote on her Facebook Tuesday night. “Maybe he will get assassinated this term.”

“OTTAWA - The Bank of Canada purged the image of an Asian-looking woman from its new $100 banknotes after focus groups raised questions about her ethnicity.……..

The Strategic Counsel conducted the October 2009 focus groups in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Fredericton, at a cost of $53,000.

The Toronto groups were positive about the image of an Asian woman because "it is seen to represent diversity or multiculturalism.”.

In Quebec, however, "the inclusion of an Asian without representing any other ethnicities was seen to be contentious."  

One person in Fredericton commented: "The person on it appears to be of Asian descent which doesn't rep(resent) Canada. It is fairly ugly.”.

George Zimmerman’s lawyers propose a bizarre defence

Now Zimmerman’s lawyers are claiming that Trayvon Martin shook Zimmerman’s head so hard that he got shaken -baby syndrome and as a result of that he didn’t know what he was doing when he shot the teenager. A 28 years old man, 180lb, given shaken baby syndrome by 150lb teenager who was armed with skittles and ice tea?

My readers may wonder why I have so much interest in this story. A few years ago I vacationed in St. Petersburg Beach. What I saw truly shook me up. There is a sizable African-American population in surrounding cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg. But there was not a single African American in the hotel I was staying in. None in their restaurant. None in other restaurants I visited. None on the beaches. After a few days I saw one African American in the yard of the hotel doing some cleaning and janitorial work. He was exceptionally quiet, you would think he never talked.

I am very curious by nature so one day I approached him and engaged him in a conversation. He turned out to be a very bright man. I asked why he was so quiet and minding his own business all the time. He told me he was happy that way as it keeps him out of trouble and when he goes home he has a good time with his family.

I was shocked by the situation. I can fully understand now how a red-neck can kill a black teenager and walk away free in that state.

This must not happen in this day and age but the Southern U.S has a long way to go yet. I will never forget remarks by a taxi driver. I asked him how come, despite a sizable African population, you hardly see any African- Americans in the St. Petersburg Beach area. His response was “we keep them in their place” -in other words segregation. It really shocked me. I hope the situation has improved since my visit a decade plus ago.

Massachusetts Woman, Spews Racial Slurs At Mailman

Now that a black man is in the Whitehouse some pundits said racism is over. Not so fast. Erica Winchester of Massachusetts throws racial slurs at a postman and slaps him. It is a long journey before a cure for the disease called racism could be found. It is unfortunate that too much medical research is devoted to physical ailments and relatively little on mental disorders such as racism.

Origins of the Tea Party

Father Coughlin

It surely is not a new movement. Although it might have not been called Tea Party some of the early leading figures of this kind of ideology include Father Coughlin, Billy James Hargis , Joe McCarthy and Barry Goldwater. Last night Christ Matthews had a documentary on the Rise of the New Right. I could not find the exact video but views of Father Coughlin and Billy James Hargis were pointed out which have similarities to some of today’s Tea Party leaders. As Professor Allan Lichtman of American University highlights the main views of Father Coughlin,
“Father Coughlin had two main messages. One was an economic message, that we needed a more populist approach to economics, but his other message was highly anti-Semitic and highly authoritarian that a conspiracy of international bankers to great extent led by Jews were responsible for the Great Depression, were responsible for the continuation of hard times and that may be Adolf Hitler and Germany had some right ideas.” Allan Lichtman
We should not underestimate the Tea Party and better watch out for them. It is an old evil of racism and bigotry which is raising its ugly head. Especially the election of Barack Obama to the presidency has enraged the red-neck bigots and it is leading to no good. The birthers like Orly Taitz and their ilk are really stirring up the pot by spreading hatred.

Rick Barber: A Ra(n)T

Maybe the word rant originates from the squeaking rat and the nugget “n” was added later on. This man Rick Barber is a pure loonytoon. If you add his TV ads up(for ads click here) they translate into “Hitler is here, holocaust is about to happen and gather your armies”. Of course Hitler is referring to Obama. And holocaust and gather your armies translates into, “be ready for violence” to take back the Whitehouse and hence the country from a black man. Also it sounds like another version of the KKK.

When you feel that you had enough of these morons like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, John Boehner or John Bonehead, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and bunch of others of the breed, another raises his/her ugly head and Rick Barber is one of them.

The guy had enough nerves to appear on Chris Matthews' show, Hardball on MSNBC. Matthews put him in his place. Here is the video.
