Trash in the Pacific Ocean

We humans are doing a good job to pollute our planet. Not in too distant future it may become unlivable.

Fate of the Earth

Is it possible that the Planet Earth can become a totally barren planet in the not too distant future? In particular if the CO2 emissions and pollution continue at the current or accelerated rate?

Smog in Beijing

It is  getting really bad in Beijing. People on the streets wear masks as well as commuters in the trains wear masks.

Alberta's oil-sands are polluting groundwater

Harper government will like us to believe that Alberta's oil-sands are safe. However, a recent study has shown that that is not the case.

New federal research confirms that Alberta’s oilsands are polluting ground water and seeping into the Athabasca River. The industry has maintained that toxic chemicals are contained safely in tailing ponds, but new research shows this isn’t the case.

Frucking fracking commercial and danger to environment

The following commercial - and similar commercials - are shown every day, singing the songs of fracking and how it is supposedly safe. The reality is quite different. Fracking causes serious health and environmental problems, including drinking water pollution and disposal of fracking waste-water (the latter is a common theme in the news in Nova Scotia where they are struggling with disposal of wastewater).

The Nova Scotia, and more so the New Brunswick, governments are enthusiastic about fracking. Some fracking has been done in Nova Scotia and it is very problematic for reasons stated above. Yet oil and shale gas obtained by fracking is being drummed up as the future of energy in America and Canada. It is another Tar Sands, an ecological catastrophe. In Nova Scotia and New Brunswick there is strong public opposition, especially among First Nations in New Brunswick, because it is being proposed near their communities and on their land.

Frucking Fracking for shale gas is becoming a serious problem

Premier David Alward of New Brunswick does not get it. It is not only natives who are opposed to fracking in New Brunswick, but the general public as well. Also demonstrations to support New Brunswickers are being held around the country. But Alward is stuck on frucking fracking. I believe natives and other anti-frackers are right and more New Brunswickers and Canadians should get behind them. Fracking is being done on native lands and their permission is absolutely important.

Fracking is especially deadly to drinking water.

The exploratory drilling in New Brunswick also faces opposition from the local non-aboriginal community. Allan Marsh, the chair of the nearby local service district for Saint-Charles, told CBC News that the provincial government "isn’t listening to any of the other messages that it’s getting."

Fracking: Natural gas and risks

I watched a documentary on fracking by David Suzuki -The Nature of Things. It is an eye-opener that how dangerous fracking can be to the environment. It causes water pollution, air pollution and produces methane more than CO2 produced by other fossil fuels. Gas can show up in drinking water that if you put a match near your tap water/gas catches fire.

Here is a brief clip:

The Keystone XL pipeline: Harper will have to wait

Environmentalists are quite unhappy with the The Keystone pipeline project. Too much pollution.

"While the possible construction of the Keystone XL pipeline has made for contentious disagreements from the halls of Congress to ranches in Nebraska, the real environmental debate begins in a place most Americans have never heard of.....

The whole operation is a carbon intensive process sending more global warming gases into the atmosphere. How much depends on your point of view. The oil industry downplays the impact, but opponents claim it is up to 37 percent more carbon intensive to produce a barrel of crude from oil sands."

I am an astronaut

Does that surprise anybody? I have been an astronaut all my life enjoying the ride on a special spaceship which travels in space constantly. The name of that spaceship is earth. Hence all creatures on this spaceship are astronauts. This spaceship has survived for billions of years and is still going strong unlike the US shuttle which is being retired and placed in the Smithsonian institute after only 25 years of service.

The Earth revolves around the Sun and our Solar System revolves around the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are constantly travelling.

We must keep in mind that the atmosphere surrounding the earth is delicate and we must not destroy it by the current rate of emissions of CO2. Stephen Harper’s brain is too limited and he does not understand the dangers of global warming. His sole purpose as PM seems to be salesman for Tar Sands oil of Alberta.

Alberta is burning

Yesterday, Nov 15, 2010, there was a piece on the CBC National about the environmental disaster caused by Tar Sands. The appetite for oil is killing birds, other wild life and humans. Something needs to be done otherwise we are in deep trouble.

You can watch CBC video here.

Update: Sorry for the error in the heading. It is 'Alberta' instead of 'Albertan'.

Moscow is changing its name to Maskow

It is indeed a tragedy as there are too many forest fires in Russia and Moscow is covered in smog over and above the scorching heat. It is partially natural disaster but part of it is the incompetence of the Russian government not to take necessary precautions to minimize forest fires and effectively extinguish those which are unavoidable. This incompetence of governments is spreading like an epidemic around the world. In Moscow, in order to survive, people had to wear masks. So maybe the more appropriate name for Moscow will be Maskow. The intention is not to belittle the tragedy but highlight the incompetence of the government there.

Here is a one story on the incompetence of the Russian government. This article provides a good review of the situation in Russia.

BP=Big Polluter

Watch the above video and decide for yourself. It breaks my heart about what big oil companies like BP and other national and international companies are doing to our beloved planet and its inhabitants. They have one and only one sole motive and that is to make profit at any cost. It is about time that they're made accountable.

Modern day brutal kings.

If you think that the era of brutal kings is over then think again. The new kings of our world are multinational corporations, especially the big oil companies such as Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP, Texaco and many more.

As you know human life, other than their own, did not matter for ancient kings. The multinationals operate the same way. The environmental destruction they cause results in loss of human lives and destruction of habitats for other living creatures. All in the name of profits. Then there are wars fought over fossil fuels such as in Iraq where hundreds of thousands and may be a millions people have perished. Human brutality to fellow humans continues.

One such brutality was committed against the indigenous people of Ecuador's Amazon:

"For the indigenous people of Ecuador's blemished Amazon, it doesn't matter whether Chevron is to blame, or Texaco, or the state-owned company Petroecuador. All that matters is that the kids have rashes, the chickens are dying, the people have cancer and the earth around many of their villages is soaked with oil."
