Landmark Deal Reached to Curb Iran's Nuclear Program

I believe it is a great step forward to make Middle East somewhat safe. Only Israel is opposed to this deal which is baffling. Israel, a very small country, has over 200 nuclear war heads according to the former President of the U.S Jimmy Carter. Why Israel can have those horribly deadly weapons and not other countries in the Middle East? I believe none should have nuclear weapons.

I also believe that no one in the world should have nuclear weapons. Countries like Russia and U.S. have so many nuclear weapons that each of these two countries can destroy life on the planet earth many times over.

He made an off-hand comment that if Iranians were free and had a democratic government then Iranian people will be free to wear jeans and listen to Western music. That remark backfired on Natenyahoo.

I believe that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons. But by the same token Israel must hand over its nuclear and chemical weapons to U.N. to be destroyed. U.S. must demand the same from Israel what it is demanding from Syria and Iran. No double standards and hypocrisy.

He only loves Israel. What about Israel’s over 200 nuclear warheads? Israel used chemical weapons on Palestinians and Lebanese yet Baird only trusts Israel. Iranian President said categorically that his country is not interested in developing nuclear weapons.

Barack Obama and Martin Luther King

Was Obama a suitable person to give a speech on the 50th anniversary of MLK's "I have a dream" speech? MLK may have his own weaknesses as he was human after all, but he was not a hypocrite like Obama.

It was Martin Luther King's efforts and Lyndon Johnson's co-operation that brought about the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, which were signed by Lyndon Johnson. However, when it came to the Vietnam war, Martin Luther King spoke out loud and clear that it was an unjust war where innocent people were being killed and American soldiers were losing their lives, all for an unjust war. It made relations between Lyndon Johnson and Martin Luther King very tense. However, it is clear that Martin Luther King believed in the rights of all people whether they were Vietnamese or American.

That is not the case with Obama. He is a big hypocrite. On the one hand he talks about human rights, on the other hand he continues to kill innocent people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and during Iraq war, using drones or air strikes by warplanes. When children and women are killed by drone attacks all the Obama administration says is that they are sorry. Does this 'sorry' wipe out the guilt for killing innocent civilians? He must give back his Noble Peace Prize as he does not deserve it. Now he is all set to launch air strikes against Syria. However, it is not going to be easy. The British Parliament is not going along with Cameron. Moreover, Putin is moving some of his navy ships into the Mediterranean and closer to Syria.

Then we have Stephen Harper who wants to by-pass the Parliament and go along with Americans. He is still for pro-rogue.

It is true that what Assad of Syria is doing is totally wrong, but will an invasion of Syria solve this problem or further aggravate it? It is hard to tell.

An attack on Syria may result in a much bigger war if Russia tries to intervene and Iran may decide to participate against the U.S. and Israel. It does not look like an easy problem to resolve.

Israel and Peace in the Middle East

What is the biggest threat to stability and peace in the Middle East? It is not Iran, Iraq, or Syria... it's Israel. The government of Israel - especially prime ministers like Netanyahu - are a de-stabilizing force in the region. The hard line policies of those like Netanyahu drive open the divisions between the West and the Middle East.

Israel occupies Palestine, as well as portions of Syria and Lebanon. Rather than seeking a two-state solution, the Israeli government has continued to build settlements on the West Bank, dividing up Palestinian lands, preventing any sort of cohesive state from being formed.

This is analogous to what happened in South Africa, where blacks were provided with divided and scattered territories known as "homelands" or "bantustans." South Africa received international condemnation, what about Israel?

Israel has over two-hundred nuclear war heads, this from none other than former US president Jimmy Carter. However, while having nuclear weapons, something that makes other countries in the region nervous, Israel does not want Iran to even refine uranium, and is demanding US help on this.

The US government and Canada under Harper unconditionally support Israel, no matter what violations against human rights its government commits. Harper and Baird are complete servants of Netanyahu. Meanwhile, Barack Obama has turned a blind eye to Israel's atrocities. There was initially some hope for change when Obama was first elected, but he has turned out to be a disappointment.



The way Netanyahu is encouraging - demanding - the United States to attack Iran and its nuclear facilities could set the stage for the worst war the world has ever seen. Countries like Pakistan (a nuclear power) may side with their long-time ally Iran, even Iraq may support Iran. The way Saddam Hussein was demonized is the same treatment the Iranian government receives nowadays.

Now I do agree that Iran should not become a nuclear power, but we cannot apply a double standard. Israel must not be a nuclear power either. The hypocrisy of leaders like Barack Obama and Stephen Harper on this is appalling. There is an explosive situation in the Middle East and Israeli leaders like Netanyahu very much bear the responsibility.

Many members of the Jewish community in the United States, Britain, and even Israel itself, have condemned the actions of the Israeli government (one will actually find articles more critical of Netanyahu in the Israeli media as compared to the media in North America). In Britain, MP Gerald Kaufman - who is Jewish - has vocally condemned the Israeli government's policies. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said Gaza is the victim of the apartheid worse than what was seen in South Africa.

Stephen Harper the warrior on Iran

What the hell were Harper and Baird thinking to cut diplomatic ties with Iran? What does Harper know that the rest of the world does not know? Even Britain is not cutting diplomatic ties with Iran. Britain should be more worried about the safety of its diplomats than Canada given Britain’s participation in wars both in Iraq and Afghanistan.

British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg told the BBC that U.K. is not considering "… cutting off all diplomatic relations with Iran; it doesn't mean we are in any way lessening our determination to try to find a diplomatic solution to the nuclear question."

Niaz Salimi, the president of the Iranian-Canadian Community Council, and others point to a possible military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities as a motive behind Canada's announcement.

"For us, it's an immediate sign of attack on Iran," Salimi told Embassy magazine.

Ken Taylor, who was Canada's ambassador in Iran during the U.S. hostage crisis that began in 1979, told CBC's Hannah Thibedeau he doesn't agree with Canada's decision to suspend diplomatic relations.

"Given Canada's status as an international player, there's great value to having someone there on the ground who can interpret what is going on, to the extent that there are challenges to doing that properly," he said.

Harper wants to have no relations with Iran but then he does not want to have any relations with the Canadian public either. He and his foreign minister need to explain this more clearly to the Canadian public.

However, Netanyahu differs with his own general.

He told the network that Iran continues to enrich uranium — a key step toward developing a weapon.”

Netanyahu’s hawkishness is very dangerous for the world peace.

North Korea: Nuclear Proliferation

NBC Nightly News had an interesting piece on North Korea and policies of developing more and more potent nuclear arsenal which also has worldwide reach. This is indeed madness.

I agree that both North Korea and Iran must not have nuclear weapons especially when leadership in both these countries is erratic.

Unfortunately the U.S does not have moral authority to tell any other nation not to have nuclear weapons when the U.S itself has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.

It is the U.S who has armed Israel with a nuclear arsenal to the teeth – 150 plus nuclear war heads. I believe the U.S also assisted other countries to acquire nuclear weapons. Nations which are so-called friends to the U.S. South Korea is an example.

All this nuclear madness must stop. All countries should refrain from acquiring nuclear weaponry. U.S nuclear weapons have the capacity to destroy all life on the planet earth many times over and so does Russia. Any nuclear war will be Armageddon for the world.

Global warming and nuclear weaponry are the major threats to human existence.

Benjamin Netanyahu Visiting Canada

Netanyahu is visiting Canada and Stephen Harper is bending over backwards to please Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu is building a case to bomb Iran and its nuclear facilities. Stephen Harper is reassuring Netanyahu of his loyalty. A similar case for WMD is being made for Iran as was the case before invading Iraq.

Harper is looking for a master now that George W. Bush is gone. Netanyahu’s next stop is Washington DC. Barack Obama has so far been hesitant to encourage Israel to proceed with bombing. Now that his Presidency is on the line, he may join Harper to be another poodle of Netanyahu.

It is amazing that a very small country, which was carved out of Palestinian territory after WWII, has so much clout over Canada and the US. Netanyahu is the boss here.

Three Americans detained in Iran

One feels for the mothers who went to visit their children in Iran who are detained by Iran. I think Iran should free these people, who are two men and a woman. Read the story here.

However, it is striking how much and extensive coverage these three detainees are getting and how Iran is painted as a horrible country to detain such nice US citizens. I think all countries should show restraint. However, before Americans condemn other countries they should look at themselves too and what they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan. They went there and killed innocent civilians by the hundred of thousands – according to some estimates one million in Iraq and close to one hundred thousand civilians killed in Afghanistan.

That is not all, let us look at what happened at the Abu Gharib jail in Iraq. Innocent Iraqis tortured and killed in their own country. Moreover, ongoing torture and killing of detainees both in Iraq and Afghanistan. We must also not forget the hundreds of innocent people held at Gitmo for years.

More recently look at what Arizona is doing to those it calls illegal aliens. You must have heard of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona who thinks he has a God given right to arrest everybody who does not look lily white like him. Is the US not the worst violator of human rights? We forget that Pakistan alone has received millions of Afghanis as refugees. Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and Syria received millions of Iraqi refugees. The US must look inside its own ugly face before it can lecture the world or pretend to spread democracy. It has created more misery around the globe than any other country in recent history.

Newsmaker of the Year And War on Terror

Since the botched attempt by Faisal Shahzad, the klutz, to blow up a van in New York's Times Square, he has been in the news non-stop. Every news media around the world and especially North America has been going at it. Does it not make him an iconic figure in places like Pakistan, Afghanistan and for other sympathizers and would-be-bombers. Does it not encourage copycats?

It is thanks to Bush/Cheney policies of the past 8 years that we have come to this. They invaded Afghanistan and then on false pretences of WMDs invaded Iraq. Now it turns out that the real problem areas are Iran and Pakistan.

The invasion of Iraq has greatly strengthened Iran. Iran's main rival, who provided some balance of power in the region, was Saddam Hussein. He is gone. Iran has a free hand in the region now. With Shiites in power in Iraq, Iran has more influence in Iraq than anytime in recent history. After the US leaves Iraq the Shiite leaders like Muqtada al-Sadr will become the kingmakers. Muqtada al-Sadr is definitely not known to be pro-west. He is very much pro-Iran. Moreover Saddam Hussein was dead-set against extremists like Al-Qaeda. Now Iraq is a breeding ground for such extremists.

The botched invasion of Afghanistan has resulted in dangerous destabilization of Pakistan. Pakistan is a nuclear power and its instability makes it all the more dangerous. Moreover, a major part of Pakistan, North Western territories, are Pashtun, the same ethnic group as the Taliban in Afghanistan and many Pashtun in Pakistan have turned into hardened Taliban. I believe Faisal Shahzad comes from that ethnic background. Moreover, Pashtun are very influential in government circles of Pakistan and in the military and they hold high positions. As a matter of fact Shahzad's father, who is retired now, was a very high ranking air force officer in Pakistan. Thanks to Bush and Cheney policies both the Middle East and the Af-Pak-India regions are more unstable now.

It does not look that Barack Obama has learned much from the blunders of his predecessors. His escalation of drone attacks into Pakistan provides fuel to the fire and fertile ground for more extremists. The only way out looks like negotiations and the US and NATO may have to negotiate with the likes of Mullah Omar, the leader of Taliban. Hamid Karzai definitely cannot deliver. For the sake of peace in our part of the world and in the Middle East and Af-Pak-India region diplomacy may be the only way out. Military victory is out of the question when we don't know who the real enemy is as the Taliban has penetrated every region of Pakistan right up to the southern most city of Karachi.

In the Middle East we have to solve the Israel/Palestinian problem which is another major bone of contention. Israel also needs to realize that there is no military solution and their nuclear stockpile of weapons will be no deterrent. As a matter of fact, it will provide momentum to other Middle Eastern countries to acquire nuclear weapons and some of the former USSR states may be happy to oblige.

Israel and Iran arms race

Let me make it clear, I believe no nation should have nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction. It becomes even more dangerous when unstable states start equipping themselves with nuclear weapons.

Now Iran's Ahmadinejad claims he has nukes. US and many talking heads in the US are advocating invading Iran. Why so? Israel has over 150 nuclear warheads and it is a much smaller state in the region. Should Israel not be invaded too? I don't think either should be invaded, but I think both nations should be disarmed of nukes.

Pakistan is a relatively more unstable state than Israel and Iran. Why let them have nukes? India is a little more stable but not much more stable given its regional rivalries and rivalry with Pakistan. Israel is the least of the stable countries in the region given its history and its relations with its neighbour. Benjamin Netanyahu is more erratic than Ahmadinejad. The US and the western world must not use double standards. For the sake of peace in the region and peace in the world both Iran and Israel should be kept free of nuclear arsenal.

Iraq was invaded under the pretext that it has WMDs which was bunch of lies. Maybe it was Israel who felt threatened by Iraq and urged morons like Bush and Cheney to invade Iraq. Then there was of course the need for control of oil fields in Iraq. As long as these double standards and injustices will exist there is hardly any hope for peace. Through this double standard we are not promoting peace but inciting wars. As long as such evilness prevails the world will continue to become a more dangerous place. We have too many problems to tackle – poverty, disease such as AIDs and global warming. In order to tackle such problems we need a co-operative approach and not confrontational, double standards.

UPDATE - Correction to be made: Ahmadinejad did not say he had nuclear weapons, rather his claim is that Iran is a "nuclear nation" because it enriches uranium to 20% (this is not the same as HAVING a nuclear weapon though). Thank you Pogge for pointing this out.

Is Wolf Blitzer under cover in the U.S? ;)

He does not much care for Ahmadinejad of Iran but leaves the impression that he is sympathetic to Mousavi who was a candidate for the Presidency of Iran in the bitterly fought election of this year.

Is Blitzer actually an Ayatollah and living under cover in the U.S? Because some Ayatollahs are sympathetic to Mousavi ;)

Iran: Demonstrations

When Faux News and CNN are constantly and non-stop reporting about demonstrations in Iran using the dubious sources of twitter and facebook, then should we trust it? Is this a regime change in progress operation?

Another part which is hard to understand and swallow is that Mousavi is for change and reform. He was Prime Minister from 1981 to 1989 under the previous Ayotollah and very much a product of the 1979 revolution. Moreover he was opposed to the release of American hostages at the time and very much anti-American. So with Maousavi in charge US and the West do not stand to gain much, so why is he being promoted. Is it possible that only objective is to destabilize Iran and then move in? It is hard for the western public to understand the real going-ons in Iran. I, for one, do not believe Faux News.
