Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas against closing Gitmo

When will Americans close Gitmo? To start with, there are a lot of detainees who have not been charged with anything and the Gitmo detention centre gives a tool to extremists like Al Qaeda for new recruits.

Now Senator Ted Cruz, during a Senate hearing on Gitmo, says that Gitmo must not be closed. I believe Cruz's position is utterly idiotic and he is not helping his fellow Americans. Gitmo will not curb activities of extremists.

Three Americans detained in Iran

One feels for the mothers who went to visit their children in Iran who are detained by Iran. I think Iran should free these people, who are two men and a woman. Read the story here.

However, it is striking how much and extensive coverage these three detainees are getting and how Iran is painted as a horrible country to detain such nice US citizens. I think all countries should show restraint. However, before Americans condemn other countries they should look at themselves too and what they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan. They went there and killed innocent civilians by the hundred of thousands – according to some estimates one million in Iraq and close to one hundred thousand civilians killed in Afghanistan.

That is not all, let us look at what happened at the Abu Gharib jail in Iraq. Innocent Iraqis tortured and killed in their own country. Moreover, ongoing torture and killing of detainees both in Iraq and Afghanistan. We must also not forget the hundreds of innocent people held at Gitmo for years.

More recently look at what Arizona is doing to those it calls illegal aliens. You must have heard of Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona who thinks he has a God given right to arrest everybody who does not look lily white like him. Is the US not the worst violator of human rights? We forget that Pakistan alone has received millions of Afghanis as refugees. Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and Syria received millions of Iraqi refugees. The US must look inside its own ugly face before it can lecture the world or pretend to spread democracy. It has created more misery around the globe than any other country in recent history.

Elena Kagan: Is she pro-torture?

Very interesting discussion on Elena Kagan - the Obama nominee for Supreme Court. Is she too conservative? Her position on Bush/Cheney treatment of detainees is not clear. Did she approve of long illegal detentions, without cause, at Guantánamo Bay? Did she approve of torture? And her views on many other progressive issues are not clear. Countdown, Keith Olbermann, MSNBC.

Gitmo detainees dangerous on US soil?

The Obama administration is considering bringing some Gitmo detainees to a maximum security prison in Illinois. The Repugs are up in arms that they pose great danger and they will escape the prison and cause havoc. Yeah-right, Timothy R. McVeigh is going to do the same and many other very dangerous criminals in the US. Can Repugs get anymore stupid?

Guantanamo Bay is the poster child for extremists for recruiting purposes. It is a black spot on US justice system. It is also in violation of the Geneva Convention. It is the brainchild of war criminals like Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld.

Besides needed jobs for Illinois folks, moving the prisoners it will get rid of this recruiting symbol for extremists. It has been reported time and again that no one ever escaped from a maximum-security prison. I suppose detainees can grow wings and fly away.

Dick Cheney – Torture Mania

Dick Cheney is not giving up despite that talking heads on news networks and political pundits have pointed out that his ramblings are hurting Repugs just like the ramblings of Rush Limbaugh. Maybe astronauts should have taken these two and put them in the Hubble Space Telescope, as they do not belong on planet earth. They could have communicated there with extraterrestrial creatures. At least their lack of understanding would have been mutual – extraterrestrials not understanding them and vice versa.

Hey Dick it is about time that you get lost. It is about time to cut-off this Dick. Calling on a certain Ms. Bobbit.

Dick Cheney needs a muzzle

During the Bush administration, Dick probably ran the show but from behind the scenes and from an "undisclosed location." Since the change of administration this guy just does not shut up and he is all over the media networks singing the songs of how great Gitmo is and how by closing it Obama is endangering the security of the United States. He also says that "enhanced interrogation," or blatant torture, did work.

Hey Dick what are you trying to do? Maybe you're afraid that you and your buddies will be made accountable for unlawful torture techniques. You are carrying out, as usual, pre-emptive strikes at the Obama administration as you carried out pre-emptive strikes elsewhere with disastrous results. You're the one who created extraordinary resentment against the United States in Arab countries and in rest of the Muslim countries because of Gitmo and torture.

Resentment is, and will be, motivation for the new recruits of extremists - a resentment which may survive for decades to come. You and your buddies not only further endangered the United States but also destabilized the world, especially the Middle East and the Afghanistan/Pakistan region. So Dick, it is about time that you shut the hell up and let the chips fall where they may. Another reason to remain shut-up is that the Obama administration is very hesitant to carry out any prosecution for illegal torture activities but through your big mouth you are providing all the reasons in the world that such a prosecution must take place.

Gaza and Guantanamo Bay

Is there a difference between Gaza and Gitmo? In many cases, it is worse in Gaza. It is a small strip of land where 1.5 million people are cramped. The vast majority them live in subhuman conditions - unsanitary, cramped in small dwellings, hungry with little or no medical facilities - most of it due to blockade by Israel from sky, sea and land. Many Palestinian youth and children are captured at will by the Israeli Military and kept in the worst conditions where they are treated like animals. Some of the pictures above show the horrors. There are hundreds of stories on the Internet too. For example this one from the Guardian.

The treatment of Palestinians is so bad that Gitmo looks much more humane compared to what is happening in Gaza, and to those who are kept at Israeli detention centres.

It is time that the World's conscience wakes up so that we can end this horrible inhumanity. It is time to stop the horror, the war crimes and the crimes against humanity being committed everyday by the Government of Israel.

Hu Jintao meets Bush

Bush warns the President of China, Hu Jintao, that his human rights record is not so good. This is true given the situation in Tibet. But does Bush, of all people, have the moral authority to give that kind of advice given the murder and mayhem he has caused in Iraq.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Malaki is telling Bush to get out as soon as possible.

It is a sad story for Americans. I hope their next President will do better.

Omar Khadr and Bush's Justice

Harper is a perfect domesticated poodle to George W. Bush. We as Canadians do not deserve this man as our Prime Minister. Even the US presidential candidates (both McCain and Obama) have indicated they will close Gitmo. They gave many hints to the Harper government that he should repatriate Khadr, but Harper is too afraid of his master George W. Bush.

Khadr was a child when he was captured in Afghanistan. He should at least be considered a child soldier and tried in an appropriate court in Canada, not in some kangroo military court at Gitmo whose sole goal is to get a conviction and hang him or put the detainees in torture chambers for life.

We Canadians believe in basic human rights. It is time we assert those rights for our citizens.

Omar Khadr -- US Military Lawyer

Harper insists on remaining Bush's poodle. Gitmo trials are rigged, the PM should push for Khadr's return.

U.S. military lawyer:
"I hope that the prime minister of Canada finally decides to stand up and act like a Prime Minister of Canada and protect the rights of a Canadian citizen."

Omar Khadr: UPDATE

I just watched CBC News and their extended coverage of the Khadr video, it's absolutely horrible and uncivilized the way a 16 year old was being treated. He was a minor. According to reports, he was mistreated everywhere, including at Guantanamo Bay - especially by American interrogators.

Even one of the investigators from Canada there, whose a retired person, said a young person like Khadr shouldn't be in a place like that. He should be brought to Canada and treated. Now I'm totally convinced that it's immoral, unethical and wrong.

I am completely ashamed that Stephen Harper -- who is a complete poodle to Bush -- is taking no action. Our Prime Minister, our leaders and our politicians must be ashamed of themselves that a young sixteen year old was put in a horrible place like that, treated in a horrible way, and still held there in a place recognized internationally as immoral, unethical and wrong. This is a very sad day in Canadian history.

Omar Khadr Video Released

This video may not be clearly audible, but it's obvious that Khadr is a very scared adolescent.

I should add that I care passionately about human rights and the past record of CSIS is not good. To start with, they gave false information about Maher Arar that led him to be sent by American authorities to Syria where he was tortured.

It's sad that these officials (CSIS and related agencies) have not been made accountable.

Before I go any further, I should add that there are pending allegations against Omar Khadr. But, I believe that habeas corpus is applicable not only to the Bushes and to the Cheneys of the World, but to everyone, no matter who they are or where they are on the Globe.

I strongly believe that Khadr should be tried in a civilian court and not in a military court. Also, the trial should be in Canada under Canadian law. If he's found guilty, then he should be put in a Candian jail.

Omar Khadr is the only detainee from a Western country who is still in detention at Guantanamo. The United Kingdom and Australia have already had their prisoners extradited. It's a shame that our Prime Minister is such a poodle to Bush that he hasn't done the same for Khadr as other Western countries have done for their citizens.

All I want is fairness and justice for Khadr.
