Fracking for natural gas/oil causes earthquakes

I believe it does. Are Oklahoma Earthquakes Tied to Fracking? Answer is yes. But gas/oil companies won't admit it.

Fracking for natural gas/oil causes earthquakes

Earthquake damage (cropped) by Martin Luft.

The Latest Fracking Earthquake Research

Now for the meat of the matter. SSA cites significant increases in seismic activity linked to increased fracking and wastewater operations in Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Ohio among other states.

To give you an idea of how significant, the average rate of earthquakes above 3.0 was 21 from 1967 to 2000 according to the US Geological Survey, but it was about 100 per year between 2010 and 2012.

Fracking Causes Earthquakes

Fracking caused over 100 earthquakes in Ohio.

State geologists in Ohio have for the first time linked earthquake activity in the Marcellus Shale basin to hydraulic fracturing, confirming the suspicions of activists pushing for drilling limits in the interest of public health.

State Oil & Gas Chief Rick Simmers told The Associated Press on Friday that a state investigation of five small tremors in the Youngstown area last month has found a probable link.

He said Ohio is setting new permitting conditions in earthquake-sensitive areas and has halted drilling indefinitely at the site of the March quakes.

A seismologist with the U.S. Department of Interior said it's the first time seismic activity has been linked to Marcellus shale exploration that's swept the northeastern United States over the past several years.

Frucking fracking commercial and danger to environment

The following commercial - and similar commercials - are shown every day, singing the songs of fracking and how it is supposedly safe. The reality is quite different. Fracking causes serious health and environmental problems, including drinking water pollution and disposal of fracking waste-water (the latter is a common theme in the news in Nova Scotia where they are struggling with disposal of wastewater).

The Nova Scotia, and more so the New Brunswick, governments are enthusiastic about fracking. Some fracking has been done in Nova Scotia and it is very problematic for reasons stated above. Yet oil and shale gas obtained by fracking is being drummed up as the future of energy in America and Canada. It is another Tar Sands, an ecological catastrophe. In Nova Scotia and New Brunswick there is strong public opposition, especially among First Nations in New Brunswick, because it is being proposed near their communities and on their land.

Fracking in New Brunswick: The scientist who recommended fracking in NB is a fake scientist

Louis LaPierre of Dieppe, N.B., is invested as Member
to the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston,
November 2012. Louis LaPierre has admitted he falsely
claimed to have a doctorate in environmental science.
(CP/Fred Chartrand)

Fracking in New Brunswick is quite controversial. However, the scientist Louis LaPierre, who gave "go to" for fracking in NB, turned out to be a fake scientist. He is known now the "go to" scientist.

"Surprising revelations over the credentials of academic Louis LaPierre

For decades, a prominent New Brunswick academic, was the "go to" scientist hired by governments to review some of this country's biggest and often controversial environmental issues:

Fracking in New Brunswick, low-level flying in Labrador, The Sydney Tar Ponds, The bridge to PEI and recently an open pit copper mine in Northern Ontario."

Louis LaPierre, now 71, also taught biology at the Université de Moncton for 31 years."

Fracking: Natural gas and risks

I watched a documentary on fracking by David Suzuki -The Nature of Things. It is an eye-opener that how dangerous fracking can be to the environment. It causes water pollution, air pollution and produces methane more than CO2 produced by other fossil fuels. Gas can show up in drinking water that if you put a match near your tap water/gas catches fire.

Here is a brief clip:

You can watch full documentary here.

Shale Gas: Fracking is very dangerous for the environment

CBC "The Nature of Things" David Suzuki describes the dangers of fracking- environmental pollution, water pollution and even earthquakes result from fracking. Below is an excerpt from the program.

Fracking Linked to Earthquakes

Photobucket

Fracking is still a very unproven technology - there are threats of contamination of air and water supplies as well as rural landscapes becoming industrial wastelands. Now, there's the threat of earthquakes from the practices associated with fracking for shale gas.

These are serious issues, for the environment, for public health, and for quality of life. Is fracking worth it? In light of all this, the answer would be no, at least at the present time.

Mr. Alward of New Brunswick pushing for frucking fracking

Alward is completely ignoring public opinion. People in the town of Sussex and the village of Hampton are rightly upset. They sure are worried about the quality of their water. Fracking chemicals can enter the ground water making it flammable. Who wants to drink that water (unless you want fire in your belly) or take shower in it? Fracking is indeed dangerous. Shale gas protests in New Brunswick

Some interesting signs included:

“No fracking way”

“What the frack?”

Another good sign will be “Mr. Alward (the Premier of NB) Frack off.”
And many more. It would look that fracking is deadly on the environment. It pollutes the environment and if the chemicals used for fracking escape then it can be deadly for people’s health especially lungs.
