Omar Khadr: UPDATE

I just watched CBC News and their extended coverage of the Khadr video, it's absolutely horrible and uncivilized the way a 16 year old was being treated. He was a minor. According to reports, he was mistreated everywhere, including at Guantanamo Bay - especially by American interrogators.

Even one of the investigators from Canada there, whose a retired person, said a young person like Khadr shouldn't be in a place like that. He should be brought to Canada and treated. Now I'm totally convinced that it's immoral, unethical and wrong.

I am completely ashamed that Stephen Harper -- who is a complete poodle to Bush -- is taking no action. Our Prime Minister, our leaders and our politicians must be ashamed of themselves that a young sixteen year old was put in a horrible place like that, treated in a horrible way, and still held there in a place recognized internationally as immoral, unethical and wrong. This is a very sad day in Canadian history.

  1. I'm appalled that it took Canadians, including some politicians and media, to finally realize that this was a travesty from the get go.

An interesting article that sheds some light to the misconception that this all comes down to a terrorist attack on a US "medic":

  3. I am appalled that people are actually siding with this terrorist.

Come on, he along with many other young men trained night and day with one purpose in mind, the destruction of Western Civilization. He should be tried as a prisoner of war, and then executed once found guilty.

Khadr and the rest of his family, would have had no issue blowing up all of us prior to his capture and now that he is rightfully rotting in GT-MO, everyone comes racing out with a heavy heart.

This is war people, and too many of our brave soldiers have paid the ultimate price for proctecting us from scumbags like Khadr, time for justice to be served.

For a change, the Americans have this one right.

  4. Trogdor, vast majority of Americans are not in favour of this war and Bush's approval rating is 28%. What does that tell you?

A 15 years old does what his environment dictates him to do. His father did not do him any favour by taking him in a dreadful war area. From then on he continued to suffer.

It is not Afghans who invaded us. We invaded them. If you really care then you will care about the loss of life of innocent people in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Finally neither Afghanis nor Iraqis participated in 9/11. Why are they being punished? Let your conscience guide you for a change.

  5. Good points LeDaro, all of them. If I may, I would like to comment;

This was the only invasion/war Bush got right, and his approval rating would be much higher had he stuck with the Afghan only mission. Notwithstanding, Obama has pledged to continue fighting in Afghanistan, where the terrorists are.

At 15 you know the difference between right and wrong. Khadr knew it was wrong, he still (allegedly) did it. Does this mean that all 15 year old enemy soldiers now have a free pass?

I know the Iraqi's had nothing to do with 9/11, and Afghan nationals did not either. But guess what, the Taliban did... the orginazation Mr. Khadr fought with.

I am a dye in the wool Liberal like yourself and I bet we share probably 95% of the same beliefs. But this is one we don't.

This young man (and he was a man even then) fought for the enemy. He needs to be treated as such.

  6. Trogdor, I respect your views but do not agree with them. A young child Khadr got nothing but tragedy and continues to face it. Yes when you are so young your mind is a clean slate and your environment does the writing on it. He had his father around through his youth.

I believe if Bush would have given greater chance to diplomacy we would not be in this great mess. Now the whole region is in a turmoil – Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. What really scares me that both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers and this current turmoil could lead to horrible situation?

Iraq is another quagmire. The invasion was strictly for oil. McCain recently admitted that. Saddam hated Al Queda as they were a threat to his regime. Now Iraq has become stronghold for Al Queda. What did we gain?
