Rick Hillier Meditating
Rick Hillier, the Canadian General, will like us to believe that he was in Afghanistan to spread peace. Just another yogi. Sure. If you believe that then I have a bridge for sale.
An earlier animation converted into a video. Enjoy the meditation music. Recommend this post

Rick Hillier: What now?

Rick Hillier categorily denied that there was any torture of Afghan detainees handed over to Afghan security by the Canadian military. Gen. Walter Natynczyk said the same thing initially but then changed his story on Wednesday. Now he says there were a few cases. What happens to the credibility of Rick Hillier now, and to that of his political bosses Stephen Harper and Peter Mackay. The opposition is asking for Peter Mackay's resignation. It looks he knowingly might have misled Parliament and hence the Canadian people.
It is not a pretty picture. You may read Gen. Walter Natynczyk's story here. However, since this story broke he further inidcated that there were more similar cases. What a disgrace that Canada is being given this kind of reputation and how hard Harper and Mackay are trying to cover it up. The plot thickens. It is extremely important that there is a public inquiry.

Tom Clark of CTV on Rick Hillier

Every Friday Steve Murphy of CTV's Maritime division interviews his colleague Tom Clark from Ottawa on current events. This Friday he asked Clark about Afghanistan and the torture issue. Clark went something like this: now that Rick Hillier has spoken on the issue it is a game changer. He said Rick Hillier is highly respected by Canadians and is a man of great integrity and credibility. Oh really, Tom? Thank you for telling us that. I did not know anything about the popularity of Rick Hillier. Did the rest of you know? Well now you do.
Tom, do yourself a favour and leave your cocoon in Ottawa and travel Canada a little more and you may get a different picture. Then what do I know, he is the "expert" on current events.

Three stooges reminiscing on the Parliament Hill

Harper, Mackay and Hillier vehemently deny that there was any torture of Afghan detainees. Harper and Mackay made public statements and Hillier appeared before the Special Committee of the Parliament on Afghanistan Mission.
In other words, according to them, Richard Colvin is not telling the truth. According to them, the Human Rights Commission of Afghanistan is lying – the same commission which the Harper government has extolled in the past. The Red Cross is exaggerating and lying. Other diplomats who spoke out are lying. Media, especially reporters in Afghanistan, some of whom were embedded with Canadian forces, are lying; but these three and some other generals are telling the truth. If you believe these three under the circumstance then I have Rideau Canal for sale. Recommend this post

Stephen Harper: Emperor Without Clothes

It is amazing that Stephen Harper, Peter Mackay and Rick Hillier all either have amnesia or don't recall (typical excuse in order to hide the truth) receiving any memo from Richard Colvin, a senior Canadian diplomat in Afghanistan now posted in the US. In these memos, it was stated that detainees handed over by Canadian troops to Afghan authorities were routinely tortured. How can they not know? They have lost any credibility, not that they had any. It does not look good on Canada. We wittingly or unwittingly were party to war crimes. How can we condemn Rwanda or other similar war atrocities by other societies when we ourselves were heavily involved? Very sad times for Canada.

Meet Monk Rick Hillier

He is peace loving, caring, and a deeply soul kind of guy. It was all Paul Martin's fault that he wanted him to take Canadian soldiers to Kandahar in the middle of combat. Monk Hillier wanted to take them to an exotic and peaceful area around Kabul and meditate and ponder over the meaning of life. Then along came Harper who made similar mistakes and won't listen to Monk Hillier. Then there were these heartless bureaucrats who were not much help either. Poor Monk Hillier.
What a piece of crap Hillier has written in his new book "A Soldier First: Bullets, Bureaucrats and the Politics of War" where he blames everybody else but him for the botched mission to Afghanistan. What a cop out. He was the hawkish one. Here is what he said in 2005:
"These are detestable murderers and scumbags. They detest our freedoms, they detest our society, they detest our liberties. We're not the public service of Canada. We're not just another department. We are the Canadian Forces, and our job is to be able to kill people." - Hillier on July 14, 2005, referring to Taliban.
Does that sound like a peaceful guy to you whose job he described as killing people? Way to go tropical storm Rick (Hillier).

Rex Murphy of CBC - the know-it-all
Rex Murphy last week gave an interesting commentary, as usual. He commented on Rick Hillier and made him sound like Alexander the Great. But did Alexander the Great abandon his men in Afghanistan and run to the safety of Greece?
Rex Murphy, the way he moves his head and eyes, he scares the kids watching TV in the evening.
