Rex Murphy last week gave an interesting commentary, as usual. He commented on Rick Hillier and made him sound like Alexander the Great. But did Alexander the Great abandon his men in Afghanistan and run to the safety of Greece?
Rex Murphy, the way he moves his head and eyes, he scares the kids watching TV in the evening.

He's something else, isn't he? It surprises me not at all that he'd be gushing in his praise of fellow Newf, Hillier. T-Rex doesn't let reality get in his way any more.
ReplyDeleteCheers
MOS, you know too much :) I did not know the NFL connection. You're quite right about T-Rex and reality.
ReplyDeleteBut did Alexander the Great abandon his men in Afghanistan and run to the safety of Greece?
ReplyDeleteFirst, I missed the part where Hillier was compared to Alexander the Great. Perhaps you could point it out in Murphy's transcipt.
Second, retiring is not "abandoning his men", anymore than General Henault abandoned his men when he retired in 2005. Are you suggesting that Hillier should not retire until Canadian troups are out of Afghanistan? Since the government seems committed to staying until 2011, that would make Hillier the longest serving Chiefs of the Defense Staff ever, and by a considerable extent. Four years seems about the norm.
I don't know what inspires such vacuous insults - a general contempt for the military, perhaps?
Rabbit. Read carefully what I wrote: “He commented on Rick Hillier and made him sound like Alexander the Great". It is clear that I did not say that Murphy used the exact words.
ReplyDeleteI have utmost respect for the military. Hillier may be a great guy and great soldier but a hero and a legend the way Rex Murphy described him, he is not. He is a smart guy and saw the writing on the wall, unwinnible war in Afghanistan and quit or you call it took retirement. Some media reports say he was pushed out.
Actually some soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have spoken out against aimless war. Now should I disrespect them for their opinion? I am against war and not soldiers.
Hillier "quit" after 3.5 years as Chief of the Defense Staff. The typical duration his predessors held the position was about 4 years. Thus Hillier is retiring right about when he's expected to.
ReplyDeleteThe suggestion that Hillier is abandoning his men or quitting because he sees the Afghanistan situation as hopeless is unwarranted and a cheap shot.
Rabbit, you have every right to believe whatever you want to believe. If you do not want to get facts in your way then that is your prerogative too.
ReplyDeleteThere was a story on CBS 60 Minutes tonight that Talibans are back in full force.
