Rick Hillier: What now?

Rick Hillier categorily denied that there was any torture of Afghan detainees handed over to Afghan security by the Canadian military. Gen. Walter Natynczyk said the same thing initially but then changed his story on Wednesday. Now he says there were a few cases. What happens to the credibility of Rick Hillier now, and to that of his political bosses Stephen Harper and Peter Mackay. The opposition is asking for Peter Mackay's resignation. It looks he knowingly might have misled Parliament and hence the Canadian people.

It is not a pretty picture. You may read Gen. Walter Natynczyk's story here. However, since this story broke he further inidcated that there were more similar cases. What a disgrace that Canada is being given this kind of reputation and how hard Harper and Mackay are trying to cover it up. The plot thickens. It is extremely important that there is a public inquiry.

  1. But does the public really care enough for it to make much difference? When will the Canadian public finally have had their fill with the lying and duplicity that are the core of the Harper government?

You have to give the guy credit. He's the master at damage control. By either simply denying or showing complete indifference to each wave of scandal that has washed up on the Tories' beach, each has in time receded harmlessly. The waterline keeps Harper from getting a majority but the waves never sweep him out to sea either.

  2. MoS, you know and I know that part of the problem is lack of alternative to Harper. Iggy is not much of an alternative. With a strong Liberal leader Harper would have been footnote to history by now. There is a need for a leader to excite the public to reclaim Canada and its values. Currently there is no such leader on the horizon. It is sad.

  3. I don't think we're going to have an effective Liberal leader until Liberals return to their progressive roots. Who wants a "Conservative-Lite" Liberal party? The polls plainly show the Canadian people aren't interested.

  4. “I don't think we're going to have an effective Liberal leader until Liberals return to their progressive roots.” You hit the nail right on the head. That is the crux of the problem. There is a need for major shake-up at the top echelon of the liberal party. Iggy can’t do it. I don’t see any in the current Liberal caucus who can. We have diagnosed the ailment but no cure yet.

I should add that progressive values and good leader are symbiotic –leader playing the pivotal role.
