Gaza situation worsens – It is a tragedy of extraordinary proportion

"As a Jew, it's very moving to see so many people who are so outraged at Israel's actions," Sayle said. "Israel is a democratic country that is behaving like a terrorist organization."

  1. Genocide comes to mind in this overwhelming atrocity.

  2. The death toll is nearing 500,000 with this massacre alone. How is it human rights hypocrites fail to acknowledge what is happening to the Palestinians is a crime against humanity.

  3. Thanks Penlan and Beijing York for your comments. This is too much. It is too bad that Western nations are sitting on the side watching this unfold. Bush and Harper are a total disgrace. Leadership in Canada is generally not promising.

  4. France's Foreign Minister has just issued a statement condemning Israel for what it's doing to Gaza. Let's hope we see more countries take this stand.

BY - 500,000? Where did you get that no.?

  5. In an earlier report, an interview with a Palestinian reporter, they were reporting as many as 430,000 deaths since aerial bombardment started. I found the number staggering.

  6. Me too BY. That's why I found it difficult to believe. It's the 1st time I've heard the fatalities to be so high. Absolutely shocking. I hope it's a mistake.

  7. I've been looking around & at the moment the highest fatality rate I can find is close to 500. Probably higher now with the land, sea & air attacks combined.
I think the 500,000 figure is wrong.

  8. May be 500,000 figure is over the years. Current death toll I believe is 500 and close to 3000 wounded and 1.5 million in a sardine cane sort of thing. They have nowhere to go. People dying because of hunger, unsanitary conditions and lack of medical facilities is much higher.

  9. Am thoroughly disgusted by the western powers, including Canada, and the purportedly democratic states. There's no equivocation on my part. I do NOT support Israel, neither its current invasion nor its establishment at the expense of Palestinians.

  10. If we claim to care about human rights then we must take a stand on the current situation in Gaza. It is one of the worst violations of human rights in the world and total disregard for human life. I agree that what Israel is doing is wrong and it is losing international sympathies.

  11. penlan, I must have misheard that earlier report. I admit the radio was on in the background and in another room. Maybe I conflated the current near 500 casualties with a number of deaths over the years. That or a mental brain disconnect.

When I think of it, half a million over the course of 10 days would actually dwarf the number of casualties of past wars or genocides.

  12. LeDaro,

WE care about human rights along with the majority of Canadians. Harper & the Con govt. do NOT care. And they are the ones that make the statements that the world listens to. They are the ones who set the agenda. Iggy, Layton, & Duceppe can make their statements but are not heard on the global stage.

Also, Iggy's statement was exactly the same as Cannon's - "Israel has the right to defend itself", blah, blah, blah. I'm angry about this as I was hoping to hear something different. Dion, I'm sure, would have said something different. I think Iggy has a lot of pro-Israeli members in his circle - like Cherniak & Kinsella among others. If they have a lot of influence on him we won't see any change.

I'm getting the sense that Iggy & Harper are inter-changeable on many issues, especially on foreign affairs, & this is not good.

BY - it's easy to mishear things. :) 500,000 would be about 1/3 of Gaza's population & if that many had died there would be a huge outcry around the world.

  13. penlan, you summed it up very well. My sentiments are the same. By "we" I meant Canada as represented by Harper and leaders who often speak of being champions of human rights.
