Hamid Kazai and Elections in Afghanistan

There is a lot of talk of election fraud in the recent elections in Afghanistan. Many NATO countries have expressed their concerns. So did our grand leader Stephen Harper. Is it possible that Karzai is getting a little edgy from all this criticism?

Our mission in Afghanistan needs to be re-assessed. In the recent Afghan elections there are complaints of hundreds of fraud cases. Karzai's own former foreign minister and now his main political opponent Abdullah Abdullah has spoken out about the rampant fraud. On CNN he said that Karzai is doing as much harm to Afghan society as the Taliban. This is very depressing to hear when our soldiers are giving their lives to better the lives of Afghans. Unfortunately the lives of Afghans are not getting better, it is definitely not the fault of the soldiers, it is the corrupt political system in Afghanistan.

Karzai is allied with war lords and drug lords and yet all he can claim control of is Kabul - that's why he is called "the Mayor of Kabul." Maybe he needs these alliances to merely survive. Can NATO change that situation? Many experts say not through military force. The only solution left is negotiations, including with tribes allied to the Taliban, and to put a government in place that will better represent the will of the people of Afghanistan. A very tall order.

Our main concern must remain that our soldiers are not giving their lives in vain.

I intended to write more about the Afghanistan situation, the Karzai government, the corruption and fraudulent elections as claimed by Karzai opponents and some independent observers, but out of respect for Pte. Patrick Lormand I leave it at this for the time being.

Afghanistan Elections: Who is the winner?

Too many claimants to win the August 2009 elections of Afghanistan but hardly any real winner. Karzai and Abdullah both are claiming victory. I suppose Bush can claim victory that he brought democracy to Afghanistan. Oh yes, our own Prime Minister Steve is claiming some victory too as he thinks he was instrumental in bringing democracy to Afghanistan. What democracy? We don't know. And above them all is Taliban laughing at them because after 8 years US and NATO forces have gotten nowhere in Afghanistan. It is a dead loss literally – hundreds of NATO young men and women dead and thousands of Afghanis dead and getting nowhere.

Afghanistan: Thriving Democracy?

In the West we mean by democracy open and free elections to elect leaders. Is such a thing happening in Afghanistan? Poor general public is under the gun whether they go and vote or stay home. If they don't vote then they're a part of the Taliban and thus face guns from NATO or the US and if they vote then they may face Taliban guns for being allies with the enemy or infidels. In either way this election in Afghanistan at this time is a big farce.
