Obama Salutes the fallen soldiers

It was a touching movement. It shows that Obama cares for fallen soldiers. Why is Stephen Harper not doing the same for our fallen soldiers? Another Canadian soldier was killed this Friday. After all, Harper fully supported Bush's war and the least he can do is pay respect to fallen soldiers. Also, the public needs to know about the sacrifices and price of the war in human lives. Why is there a curtain of secrecy when it comes to our fallen soldiers? It seems to be copy of Bush's policy.

Every time a soldier is lost we should lower the Canadian flag on Parliament Hill.

  2. What good is a salute if his policies are creating more "fallen" soldiers?

(It's a terrible euphemism. They're not fallen, they're dead. For nothing.)

  3. L-girl, you have a point. However, a solute will make the tragedy more public and hence there may be change in policy.

It is a Bush left over policy that less the public knows better it is. That must be changed.

  4. That's very true. The US is fighting 2 wars and the public is barely aware of it. Very convenient for the war-makers.

  5. Bush didn't get us into Afghanistan, the Liberal government did, via the UN. The Liberals also voted to extend our stay until 2011.
Of course if you demonise Harper again, some people might not remember these facts.

  6. Tom, it is a Bush war.

Liberals are not lily white on this. I agree with you. The problem is that it is an un-winnable war and in the process Pakistan has been de-stabilized too.

I should add that Harper was the most enthusiastic participant after he became PM. His enthusiasm only dwindled after the change of guard at the Whitehouse.

  7. The Liberals got Canada into Afghanistan. That's a fact that should not be forgotten.

Harper would have put Canada in Iraq, too. That's worth remembering, too.

  8. L-girl, you're quite right. However, Iggy would have done the same with regard to Iraq.

  9. And then some! Believe me, I'm no supporter of Ignatieff, who helped justify torture for the US public.

But he wasn't in the picture then. The Liberals wisely kept Canada out of Iraq, and Harper disagreed.

  10. True. Chretien showed the guts and said no.

Like torture Iggy expressed his views on Iraq too, that invasion was necessary, through a column in some US newspaper. He tried to retract later but it was too late.

  11. It was much more than a column. He wrote a series of lengthy features for the New York Times Magazine. It comes out on Sunday and has a huge, educated, influential readership. The articles justified the invasion, torture, etc. through all kinds of intellectual gymnastics. His supporters like to say this is not true, but I read all the articles and it's all there in black and white.

Some time later, he wrote another lengthy feature where he admitted he was wrong. He didn't actually apologize, but he said it was a mistake to invade Iraq. But he didn't retract his statements about torture.

  12. L-girl, thank you for additional information. All his blunders in the past will be fully exploited by Cons during an election. It does not look good for Libs.
