Is Canada a Welfare State?

If you have the patience to read the National Compost then you may like to read this article. These are similar views expressed by Harper before he ever became Prime Minister. In light of the healthcare debate in the US, Canadians should have realized how better off we are than the US. But the National Post will like you to think otherwise. No wonder CanWest has gone belly up and may be looking for a bailout. Corporate welfare is good for these folks but for the general public it is sooo bad. Look at the corporate welfare in the US the model state for the National Post and others of its ilk.

The link to the article is below.

Why Canada became a welfare state.

  1. Another example of Conservative hypocrisy.
Their mantra: what's good for the goose isn't necessarily good for the gander.
Afraid I'm a migraine sufferer and reading the National Post will only cause another one of them.
But I do have the actual quote from Stevie: I will paraphrase, 'Canada is a Northern European Welfare state of the worst kind".
Go see Michael Moore's latest movie. I assure you, it will provide more reasons why not to move to the U.S.

  2. The US isn't a welfare state? It certainly is. It's just poorly administered, and terribly uneven.

And I don't just mean the massive corporate welfare.

The author tries to blame Canada's welfare state on Ottawa's 'appeasement' of Quebec, but the rise of unionism, which predates the Quiet Revolution, has a lot more to do with it. Nor does that thesis seem to explain the various provincial-level programs which were brought in all over Canada.

  3. CK, thank you for your comment and the link. Great post on Capitalism, No Love Lost. I don't blame you if you don't want to read National Post article. It is annoying.

Mark Francis, thanks for your comment. US is indeed a welfare state but predominantly corporate welfare. Generally very poorly managed. The Post article is a typical where facts are the least concern of the writer.
