CBC in the Jaws of Death

Over the years I have learned to appreciate the contributions of the CBC as a broadcasting organization. It gives more objective information than commercial news networks with less annoying commercials. It has become a national institution and a national icon up with our beloved snowbirds. To finish it off will be a tragedy, as it may become another Faux News. We need to save it from such sudden death and from the Harper government's Jaws of Death.

Now here is something I can support current Liberals on, saving the CBC. If only the Liberal leader would show more gumption on other issues such as the environment and war and peace issues in the world.

  1. What an absolutely frightening pic of Harper. Also, for next year's budget, in case you didn't know, the Cons plan on cutting another $58,000,000 from the CBC budget.

They definitely plan to kill CBC, in it's present format anyway - unless we get rid of Harper & his thugs before they can do this despicable deed.

  2. Ironically, as the government declares war on the CBC here, it's stepping up support for its military-run propaganda radio station in Kandahar.

Guess that doesn't count as public broadcasting.

Using this strategy, they won't need to kill it outright - they'll just try to strip its funding to the point where it's unviable, then say, "look, we were right all along, Canadians prefer private radio." The usual starve-the-beast sort of strategy.

  3. I agree with you both. I think Harper and Co. are starving CBC to death. However, we do not have forceful opposition or government in waiting. I quite frankly cannot support Iggy given his views on international policy and his stand on Tar Sands and environment in general. Canada is in for a rough ride.

  4. RevDave, I read your post. Very good one. It is a shame. BBC and Voice of America have been doing it for ages and it had no impact. We never learn.

  5. I'm definitely with you on the Iggy issue. Pretty brutal dilemma having to choose between him and Harper.
