George Dubya Bush – The Decider

I want to start 2009 on a good note. Democrats are taking over the administration in the US, Barack Obama is coming in with a promise of change. His challenges are almost insurmountable but it is hoped that he will try and move forward and at least not let the World situation and economy get worse. In 2008 we also saw Australia's John Howard (a Bush follower) replaced by the centre-left Kevin Rudd. Same in Britian (though this was actually in 2007). Gone is Bush’s poodle Tony Blair, he is replaced by Gordon Brown who is no poodle and actually feels uncomfortable in the company of Bush. French President Sarkozy made more news about his girlfriend and then wife Carla Bruni than anything else. On the international stage he is still an unknown quantity.

We need a change in Canada. It is hoped that, all in all, 2009 will be a much better year than 2008.

Now I want to talk about Dubya the Decider. MSNBC had an interesting documentary, Decider, about Dubya hosted by Chris Mathews. In this documentary the failings of the Bush administration were pointed out including Iraq and the economy. One strong point was made that Bush thinks that he makes decisions based on his guts. Maybe we should be thankful that he did not make his decisions based on his brains because they could have been worse. It was pointed out that he did some good work, such as help for AIDs and malaria victims in Africa, but that is like a prostitute donating to a church. Though at least a prostitute is not in the business of hurting people and actually pleases the lonely. So they do a lot more good work than Dubya can ever dream of.

I do not have to explain what is in Dubya's guts. He is full of it and his decisions stink. But if they only stank that will be ok, they were actually vicious for the world and the US. The destruction he caused in Iraq continues - the Iraqis' frustration was evident in Bush's press conference where he was greeted with flying shoes, hurled at his face. Also, the quagmire he created in Afghanistan will continue for sometime to come. In the process he forgot about his own country and economy which is in the worse shape since the 1930s depression. He ignored the other conflict in the Middle East and there was the Israel and Lebanon war which resulted in death and destruction but no solution. Now we have a heart-rendering situation in Gaza which Israeli commentators have stated is more about ballots than bullets as there is an upcoming election in February. Extraordinary tragedy. What length politicians will go to save their own behinds and serve their own political objectives?

Bush the Decider (or full of it) has been an utter calamity for the last 8 years. One can only hope and pray that events will take turn for the better.
