History was made today as the first African American became the Presidential nominee of a major political party in the United States. Obama is highly likely to be the next President, and thus the first African-American President. It was a moving experience for many. When Hillary Clinton moved for the nomination to be made by acclamation, there were tears in the convention centre. One has to admire American democracy where people who once faced segregation and slavery now have opportunities open to them to get elected to the highest office in the land. All the kudos to the United States, it was moving to witness this.

I do not think Obama is African American. His father was born in Africa, not from slaves but a man from Kenya, who met a white Hawaiian lady and Obama was born in Hawaii of a Kenyan father and American mother.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is what someone on TV was saying about black slaves and their ancestors..the are African American, Obama is not one of these. What then is he ?
I was going to say that it is great to see him get so far.

ReplyDelete???
Last time I checked, Kenya was in Africa.
Also, the term "Hawaiian lady" can be confusing as his mother was not an ethnic Hawaiian. But Obama was born in Hwaii and his mom wasn't on vacation...
Of note:
Barak Obama is the first Indonesian speaking US Democratic Party candidate. He is also the first Hawaiian born.
He is also the first to have both Asian and African siblings.
Lizt, on this one I agree with Altavistagoogle. His father was African and his mother American and he was born in US and that does make him African-American. He also has a very diverse experience growing up and in his youth.
ReplyDeleteI think Walter Mondale summed it up when he said that this man would have not been allowed in the convention hall fifty years ago and now he is the nominee for the president. US has come a long way and one has to admire that.
I thank you both for your comments.
