John Baird finally says something about Israeli settlements

John Baird and the Harper CONS had been trying to outdo Netanyahu on the UN vote recognizing Palestine, threatening to cut off ties to the Palestinians showing incredible indifference to their plight. Now, an about-face... at least to a degree.

While it is commendable that Baird is finally speaking out against the Israeli settlements on the West Bank, one cannot help but wonder if this is a face-saving measure in light of earlier behaviour.

  1. Actually, if you take a close look at Baird's remarks, he tacitly excuses Israel by contending Israel's actions were provoked by the Palestinians. He says "destroying the Palestinian homeland is wrong, sort of, but the real blame for that goes to the Palestinians."

There's nothing remotely commendable in that, nothing at all.

  2. Of course, and he's right. The real blame goes to the Palestinians:

    1. They are close to Europe and have access to the sea and plenty of cheap labor. They could open factories and export to Europe. But they chose not to.

    2. Instead of teaching their kids useful skills to they can build an economy, they chose to teach them to glorify death and hate Israel (whether this is justified or not), this is the choice they have made.

    3. They chose a government that publicly says it wants to destroy Israesl and launches rocket attack that target civilians.

    4. When Israel withdrew of Gaza strip in 2005, they used the new empt land to build rocket factories. If there's one industry in Gaza, it's the war crime industry. That's their choice of what to focus on.

The Palestinian's agenda is not to figure out how to live alongside Israel, with peace or without. Their only wish is how to destroy Israel and this is above all. This is why the blame goes to them.

  3. Mound, thank you for pointing that out. What a mole-head he is and Harper government in general. Shame!

Morris Kast, looks like you have Netanyahu’s talking points. If Israel is such a victim then why only 9 nations voted against UN resolution to give Palestine ‘non-voting observer state’ status. Actually 2 nations – U.S and Canada as rest are relatively not that significant.

Israel has committed many crimes against Palestinians.

A Jewish British MP,SIR Gerald Kaufman, said the following about Israel:

“My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza. The present Israeli government ruthlessly and cynically exploits the continuing guilt from gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians.”

He said the claim that many of the Palestinian victims were militants “was the reply of the Nazi” and added: “I suppose the Jews fighting for their lives in the Warsaw ghetto could have been dismissed as militants.”

You have the right to your views but not your own facts.

  4. "They" Morris? And what if we cherry picked a few "theys" out of the Israeli side? We could readily depict them as the most foul Nazis since, well, since the Nazis. So take your rank bigotry and shove it up your ass, Morris.

You Likudniks never pass up an opportunity to dehumanize all Palestinians as terrorists.

  5. 1. I am not a Likudnik. I am an Israeli who wants to see peace in his lifetime and willing to make big compromises for it.
    2. I've been always for loosening the restrictions Israeli poses on the Palestinians to encourage peace. Time after time I was proven wrong. Everytime Israel gave anything to the Palestinian they turned it against us.
    3. If Israsel wanted to kill Palestinian grandmothers it would not use super expensive advanced rockets that target specific persons and targets. They would just throw the cheapest stuff that explodes. This is unfortunately what war looks like. The Palestinians are those who target civilians and happy to see innocent people die.

  6. Morris Kast, you have every right to your opinion but facts are not on your side.

SIR Gerald Kaufman is a supporter of Israel but not its tactics. He was friends with some former P.Ms of Israel. He has a lot more credibility.

I also agree with my fellow blogger Mound of Sound. He is very knowledgeable of the geo-political situation in the Middle-East. Unlike you he gives a very objective point of view.

You just keep repeating yourself and add nothing new. Israel cannot sit on others' land, build illegal settlements on that land and still say it is for the peace. Facts are loud and clear and render your argument meaningless.

  7. Hi LeDaro,

I am against illegal settlements and disgust by the lunatics who live there and grow their children there.

I was intrigued to what territories you referred to when you wrote "others' land"?

From the Palestinian point of view though, every inch of Israel is "other's land". They don't want 1967 borders. They can't accept the existence of Tel Aviv. Here is what Mashaal said in Gaza today:

GAZA - Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, making his first ever visit to the Gaza Strip, vowed on Saturday never to recognize Israel and said his Islamist group would never abandon its claim to all Israeli territory.

"Palestine is ours from the river to the sea and from the south to the north. There will be no concession on an inch of the land," he told a sea of supporters at an open-air rally marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of Hamas and a celebration of the organization's "victory" over Israel.

So, do you think it is safe for Israel to gradually shrink Israel to 1967 borders? What will happen then?

  8. Morris Kast, this will be my last response to you. You may not be Likud but your ideas are not much different. Fair minded Israelis must get together and tell their government to stop injustices against Palestinians.

You exactly know what I mean by 'others' land’ --the land which Israel grabbed in 1967 and more later on.

It is Israel who is intransigent. It is not the ordinary folks who are building settlements without the support of PM and government in general. In the most recent case of settlements it was retaliation by Israel to UN resolution.

The whole world has expressed disgust over these settlements including U.S. and UN.

  9. Obviously, before 1967 everything was peaceful and the Palestinians were really happy with Israeli borders. This is why the Arab world started wars on Israel in 1956 and 1948 before there were any illegal settlements.

The settlements as annoying as they are are not a reason for not making peace: Israel demonstrated twice that it is able to give up those settlements for peace. With Egypt it worked, with Gaza it resulted in rockets. If there was a path to make peace that involves removing those settlements Israel would take it right away.

  10. Morris, give up now. Israel feels threatened by Gaza???? It is like saying U.S is threatened by natives.

  11. Gaza is not an existential threat to Israel, but it is a security threat. Hundreds of rocket that are thrown from there daily that are aimed at Israeli civilians can't be taken lightly.

What's the point in returning to 1967 borders if you can't get security and peace in return?

Will you become pro-Israel if Israel returned to 1967 borders and the Palestinians kept throwing rockets at it? Or you'll ask the Israelis to return to Germany because that's where they were before 1948.

  13. Mound of Sound had right response for you:

"So take your rank bigotry and shove it up your ass, Morris."

I showed too much patience. Now you're blaming me of anti-semitism. Typical last resort of 'rank bigots'
