Michael Ignatieff in the dumps when it comes to approval ratings

He is the least liked amongst the three national leaders. What was the Liberal caucus thinking when they appointed him leader? What is next for the Liberal Party? It does not look good. Ignatieff does not seem to connect with voters at all. What is it about him? Highly educated and travelled the world but when it comes to politics he was better off staying in the academic world. I do want the Liberal Party to succeed but currently all the signs are depressing.

  1. What he lacks is vision. He does not have a platform. People worry that the liberals have become part of the problem, they also want unlimited power to advance their friends agenda's. He isn't trustworthy. We need new talent, with actual ideas for moving forward.

  2. Kim, I agree that we need new talent but Liberals are in no mood to make that change. How do we get that new talent?

Harper must go but what is the alternative.

  3. He's invisible. He's uncharismatic. He's wobbly, has mushy middle and nobody knows what he stands for. Is he a progressive? He often goes against liberal views. Is he a small c conservative? He often espouses conservative views. Is he in the middle? He most often seems to compromise between left and right but has no consistency. Does he know how to campaign? That's the important question. The answer? Not on his life. And there lies the rub.

  4. Jymn, I think majority of the grassroots Liberals will agree with you but how we convince big wigs that it is a time for change. Iggy is dragging the party down and down. Sooner it stops better it is.

  5. I still say much of it is the media which has been endorsing Harpercon for quite a few years now. So not helpful.

I also say that much of it is our attitude. Sorry, but the question what's the alternative to Steve is mind boggling to me.

What is this charismatic BS anyway? What? You want him to perform circus tricks on demand?

He was never my first choice, but he's all we got.

With Steve's growing religious right movement and you know that will take over the party if he gets a majority; a totalitarian regime. If you thought the opposition was useless now, think if we let him loose with a majority. Do you really want to entertain that possibility?

Duceppe in 2008 campaigned on "I'm not Harper campaign": nothing mentioned about sovereignty and the strategy worked. Why can't it work for Liberals and Iggy? That's what I like about him: he ain't Evangelical religious right sub-culture.

Another way to look at it: status quo is a helluvalot less frightening than letting Steve transform Canada into GW Bush Americana.

New talent? Who? Bob Rae? Not after he screwed up Ontario.

Yes, for the above reasons, Iggy is the alternative; for better or worse; and he can't make it get worse as there would be no evangelicals.

Reality is Iggy ain't goin' until he loses a federal election. Problem with that is that means Steve wins; quite possibly with a majority.

Ideas? Most of us don't know what we want and/or can't agree upon it. I would like to believe that we know that we would not like a Harpercon evangelical GOP style.

trustworthy? Find a politician in North America where corporations run in the shadows?

Kim, you say 'they (liberals)want unlimited power to advance their friends' agendas.

They're all like that. Steve is entertaining the fox news crowd state side, Charles Mc Vety and the rest of the evangelical subculture and big oil and banks.

And Iggy has come up with ideas, but the media is too busy either lambasting him or ridiculing him and cheering for rah rah Steve...it's up to us to see past that...

Sorry for the rant, but I'm not getting the attitude. This isn't a time to demand reforms; this is an emergency to try to retain what we do have.

Believe me, if we let Steve loose with a majority, we will be longing for the good ol' days, meaning today or back when Chretien or Martin were PM.

These are the choices; status quo or much worse. I prefer the former, thanks.

  6. CK, I appreciate your loyalty to Liberal Party and Mr. Ignatieff. However, it has nothing to do with charismatic BS. It is Mr. Ignatieff the person and his position on issues or lack of it. He has been pro-Iraq war, colonialism, and Afghanistan war. His stand on environment is regrettable as he stands for Tar Sands. His position on Gaza was regrettable as well. That is the reason he has very little grassroots Liberal support and approval ratings in general. I am not convinced that he will be an improvement on Harper. It is a sad situation. You can be a leader but you should be able to lead and gain the support of voters and that is not happening with Mr. Ignatieff.
