Stewart Parnell: Peanuts
Stewart Parnell, owner of the peanut company whose tainted product caused illness to 600 people and up to 9 deaths, refused to testify before a congressional committee. Media reports say that he knew his product was tainted with salmonella yet told his employees to go ahead with distribution. A good example of human greed and profit prevailing over human life and well-being. It is that kind of greed and profit driven business which got us into the economic mess all over the globe today. Human greed left unbridled can cause disasters therefore we need legislation, regulations and implementation of such regulations. If we all were saints, then unbridled capitalism will succeed but until such time (which may never happen) we need to regulate.

Absolutely, but there's a difference between good and bad regulation. Regulation isn't like a knob that is just turned up or down, as so many seem to assume. There have been plenty of times where regulations have caused deaths as well, when regulators interested in covering their own butts were slow to approve life saving medication.
ReplyDeleteGood regulation makes people honest, open, and responsible for their own actions. The regulators didn't even know some of this guy's plants EXISTED.
He deserves the death penalty
This man needs to sent to prison. People have gotten sick and some have even died because he was trying to cut cost. A report was given to him showing that his peanuts were contaminated and he chose to get another report rather fix the problem. He should be jailed for life.
