TRUDEAU’S PLEDGE TO CLIMATE FUND

It is great to see Canada playing a productive role on the World stage.
The Trudeau government’s pledge of $2.65 billion dollars to help developing countries with sustainability is important. It shows Canada takes climate change seriously. It is important for these countries to build a green economy and take advantage of the opportunities therein. Thus it is important for wealthier countries to provide assistance to this goal. It is an important step to helping the poor and vulnerable most affected by climate change.

As quoted in this Huffington Post article, UNICEF Canada’s president states that:" We know that children, particularly the poorest, are disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, a fundamental threat to their most basic rights, including access to food, water, education and survival.”
Great to see Canada playing a productive role here.

I think Justin Trudeau could be a good Prime Minister and it was great that his victory speech included a strong affirmation of multiculturalism.

It would have been nice for the Greens to get more seats. Among other things, they are the only party who unconditionally oppose the Energy East tarsands pipeline. At least Elizabeth May is back in Parliament though.

Justin Trudeau's Senate Move... a great political move or amateurish

Harper has been mired in embarrassing scandals concerning his Senators, from Wallin to Duffy to Brazeau. Justin Trudeau has responded with a move that some have called "bold" and "game-changing" by kicking all Liberal Senators out of caucus. I don't think it's "bold" or "game-changing" and it does not show Trudeau to be a Senate reformer.

The supposedly "independent" caucus in the Senate - whom Trudeau did not seem to consult on this move - still call themselves Liberal, have Liberal members as employees, and will still be active members of the Liberal Party. Looks all smoke and mirrors to me.

What can be done about the Senate though? Abolishing it could be a good move - it was done in New Zealand - and is being proposed by NDP leader Thomas Mulcair. The provinces abolished their upper-chambers a long time ago.

However, the constitutional hurdles to abolition would be steep. An elected Senate - unless in a disorganized and piecemeal fashion as Harper has proposed - would also require similar constitutional hurdles, and we could potentially face political gridlock from multiple houses, see the United States.

There is growing sentiment that the Senate cannot continue as is - and I don't think Justin Trudeau's proposals amount to much in practice, just political posturing. Abolition seems the best solution, but the road there would be a difficult one.

Marc Garneau Quits and Backs Justin Trudeau

Marc Garneau confirmed he's dropping out of the federal Liberal leadership race at a press conference in Ottawa.
Garneau said he spoke with Bob Rae and Justin Trudeau Tuesday night and informed them of his decision.

Garneau said Trudeau is the clear winner of the race based on his analysis of the numbers. While he felt he would come in second place, Garneau said he was in it to win and that wasn't about to happen.

"I entered this race believing I had a chance to win," he said. "Justin is about to win a decisive victory."
Garneau said in French that Trudeau has proven he can rally people and bring them to the party, so he chose to "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar."

Garneau added, "I will be a loyal Liberal and I will work for the party and the new leader in whatever capacity they choose."

Justin Trudeau Announces Leadership Candidacy

I had a chance to watch Justin Trudeau's campaign launch speech last night. I was impressed. He hit on themes I have not heard from any Canadian politician in a long time. He emphasized the importance of multiculturalism and diversity, and talked about repatriation of the constitution, how Canada was no longer a colony or dominion (something which Harper's actions - such as joint embassies with the United Kingdom - are belying). He talked about national unity and a true vision for ALL of Canada, something lacking with the NDP and Conservatives.

Of course, Justin Trudeau will have to prove himself over the course of this leadership race. He is young and inexperienced and will have to show he can grapple with the issues. As well, this Toronto Star columnist has some good points on the dangers of political coronations, of prematurely anointing someone as successor.

Nonetheless, Justin Trudeau's campaign is off to a good start, he hit all the right themes in his speech. He has great potential and Liberals have good reason to be optimistic.
