Mulroney Again: Oh no!

Did we not deal with a Mulroney before?

Brian Mulroney said at one point in time that he did not do this and that, or say this and that with regards to Karlheinz Schreiber and money exchanging hands. It turned out that he did all that and said all that. Strange now David Mulroney, one time Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs to Harper and currently ambassador to China, is saying there was no torture of detainees in Afghanistan, claiming he didn't know anything about it. Moreover, he says he does not know what Richard Colvin is talking about. Can we believe this Mulroney now? Is this guy related to Brian Mulroney. Déjà vu all over again.

Karlheinz Schreiber Deported

Karlheinz Schreiber is finally deported to Germany. He looks like a likable guy. I for some reason feel sad to see him go. He is 75 and in Germany they are waiting to charge him for tax evasion and bribery and probably he will become a political football there too.

Granted that Karlheinz Schreiber is a crook but no crook succeeds without few partners and partners he had a few.

Was Brian Mulroney involved in his deportation and was the Harper government behind this deportation? Hard to say and maybe we will never know.

Brian Mulroney – “What “is” is?”

I have been watching the Oliphant inquiry off and on whenever I get a chance. I do not know what to think of Brian Mulroney. He could have gone down in history as a good Prime Minister had he not been involved in shoddy dealings. He was no replacement of Trudeau, as Mulroney became very cozy with Ronald Reagan of the US which was not a good move.

In hindsight I think the Meech Lake Accord was a good deal for Canada and Quebec but he screwed it up by bragging about the "roll the dice" business which annoyed some Premiers and also many other politicians involved which, in the end, killed the Meech Lake Accord.

However Mulroney stood firm on human rights issues as he firmly supported sanctions against apartheid South Africa. He was also good on the environment and earned the title of green Prime Minister. He definitely was much more progressive than Stephen Harper.

His achievements went down the sewer after revelations of his shoddy dealings with Karlheinz Schreiber. What was he thinking? Mulroney had many Clintonian moments during the inquiry. He was asked why he did not tell the truth during the Airbus inquiry about having business relations with Schreiber. Mulroney declared during that inquiry that he had nothing to do with Schreiber. His answer was typical Clintonian, "it was the context" and he had no dealings with Schreiber in the context of Airbus. Yeah right Brian, too bad for you. At least Clinton had a lot of fun. Then Mulroney was asked why did it not bother him that he was receiving these bags of cash and that it could be inappropriate and illegal. He retorted something like this, "No sir they were not bags they were legal size envelopes." Yeah sure Brian and that really makes it legal and all is well.

It does not look good for Brian Mulroney. He mentored Stephen Harper and Steve already completely disowns him. What a cruel world! One feels sad for Mulroney and his family. He is 70 years old and should be enjoying his life as an elder statesman but all the shoddy dealing are coming back to haunt him. Life, thy name is tragedy.

Harper: Prison of his own making

Harper has trapped himself in his own follies.

The most recent is fixed-date-election-gate. He passes legislation for a fixed date and then violates that law by calling an election, which is expected to be called on Sept 7, 2008 for October 14, 2008.

Other scandals include,

Cadman-gate: An ongoing saga which could be a disaster for Harper. He wants to have a quick election prior to more revelations on this fiasco

Mulroney-gate and Karlheinz Schreiber-gate: an inquiry is underway and more revelations may be coming soon again, he wants a quick election prior to such revelations.

Afghanistan-gate: The situation has gone from bad to worse. Now the reports show that the enemy is even stronger than when Canadians troops started the aggressive role. After losing the lives of close to a hundred brave soldiers, what have we achieved? Even Karzai is not pleased and he has made public statements on that time and again. If, heaven forbid, Harper wins a majority, we might find our soldiers in Iraq too.

Then of course there was in-and-out-gate where the Conservatives tranferred money from the national party to the local riding association, only to transfer it back again (in an attempt to circumvent electoral finance laws).

A fellow blogger, Penlan, suggested that I do a picture of Harper showing him behind the ultimate-gate – the slammer-gate. If Harper ends up here, he will be in the good company of his friend Karlheinz Schreiber.

Hillary Clinton: The 'real' ambition

The way the Ohio and Texas primaries were won by Senator Hillary Clinton is a little disconcerting, as it was due to our Canadian diplomat who wrote an erroneous memo on NAFTA and Obama, and then leaked it where it was exploited by Senators Clinton and McCain. We cannot afford to interfere in the elections of our neighbours, the United States, who are the most powerful country in the World. If Obama wins the Whitehouse, how will this impact our relations with America?

Mr. Harper has too many fiascos on his hands with Karlheinz Schreiber, Cadman, and now this diplomatic mess.
