Barack Obama: Reducing Nuclear Stockpiles

Ronald Reagan said that he aimed for a World without nuclear weapons and negotiated an arms reduction treaty with the Soviet Union that reduced America's nuclear arsenal by one-third.

Now, Barack Obama is proposing something very similar vis a vis Russia... and the tea partiers, Sarah Palin, and Glenn Beck (and other Faux News acolytes) are yelling at the top of their lungs that Obama is disarming America.

So when Reagan does it, it's okay, but when Obama does it...

Nuclear weapons are horrific, while I do not think we will see their elimination in our lifetimes, to reduce stockpiles is a step in the right direction - plus it sends a strong message to nuclear wannabees such as Iran and North Korea that America is willing to practice what it preaches in the way of reducing the spread of nuclear weapons.

In an age of terrorism, nuclear weapons are not an effective deterrant. They potentially wreak great destruction. That is why we must strive for their reduction and ultimately their elimination. Obama's Nuclear Security Summit is also a step in the right direction in this regard.

Iran, Rafsanjani, Mousavi and turmoil

Rafsanjani

Right from the beginning I had my serious doubts about Faux News's reporting on Iran and about CNN's Wolf Blitzer going on non-stop about a reformist move in Iran and then kind of gloating about it. I stopped watching CNN during the Iraq invasion as it had become a propaganda organ for the Bush administration. Right from the beginning there was something not right about the Iraq war and it became obvious as time went by. I did not watch CNN for a few years to come and only started watching it again during the last Presidential election.

Rafsanjani and Mousavi reformists? I kept thinking, how could that be? Rafsanjani was president in the 1990s and very much a part of the Ayotollah establishment and ideology and of course Mousavi was Prime Minister from 1981 to 1989 under Ayotollah Khomeini. It is apparent that there is something more to it. It is a struggle for power between the hardliners and unfortunately young people are being used as pawns to obtain these objectives. Moreover, it is a golden opportunity for the US and other western interests to destabilize Iran. However, it is very hurtful to see that young people and the general public are paying the price.

In almost every society a few are in control and the vast majority is manipulated for the benefit of those few. That applies even more in emerging democracies like Iran. The current struggle looks like one between Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad. Rafsanjani being a very rich and influential man has the capability to finance and stir up the trouble.

A fellow blogger Ken, who knows much more about Iran than I do, has great posts on these issues, which I would recommend reading:

The US has been trying to destabilize Iran.

The Nation magazine and the Iranian election.

Congressman David Vitter: The Expert Tea-bagger

Repugs are protesting against Obama over taxes and the role of government (even though most of them didn't oppose Bush's interventionist measures on the bailouts in the dying days of his Presidency, and with Obama's tax increase - which only affects those with higher incomes - the highest income tax rate will still be well below what it was under Reagan).

So guess who is the expert in tea-bagging? None other than David Vitter. Remember the Louisiana Senator who was a good customer of a Washington DC Madam... that is, until he got caught. Have Repugs bothered to Google tea-bagging and what it means.

Another supporter is Rush Limbaugh, an overweight fool who makes millions for being a big mouth. What is society coming to?

Another stanch supporter of the tea-bagging protest is Faux News (aka. False News, aka. "F" word News) which includes Glenn Beck who has to be clinically insane given the way he acts on his show.

All this is totally disgusting. The sad part is that it is taking dangerous turn and it may play into the hands of violent fascist types whose roots are in racism and bigotry. They are capable of creating chaos in society with dangerous consequences. I hope this evil will be nipped in the bud.
